Indian teen tourist dies after horse-drawn carriage bolts in Central Park, reviving calls to ban NYC rides
The Guardian Nigeria—An 18-year-old Indian tourist, Romanch Mahajan, died after being thrown from a horse-drawn carriage in Central Park when the driver stepped down to photograph the family and the horse bolted, overturning the cab and flinging two passengers. Mahajan died trying to save his mother, witnesses said, in what USA Today reported as the eighth horse-related incident in Central Park in 13 months. The accident prompted the carriage industry to voluntarily suspend rides and reignited longstanding debate over banning the practice, with competing City Council bills proposing either a ban or enhanced protections. A separate carriage horse also died in the park around the same period, drawing additional scrutiny.
